Private Onsen Retreat

Japan’s hot springs are famous, but finding one that feels entirely your own is rare. Private onsen retreats give you exactly that – your own bath, often outdoors, surrounded by mountains or forest. We’ve stayed in places where snow was falling as we soaked, the steam rising against a backdrop of pine trees. The contrast of icy air and mineral-rich water is one of the most vivid experiences you can have here.

The beauty of a private retreat is the space to linger. There’s no timetable, no crowd, no self-consciousness. You can step in at dawn to watch mist roll off the hills, or late at night under a sky full of stars. Meals are usually served in your room, often built around the same local waters that feed the spring, whether river fish or mountain vegetables.

For many of our travellers, this becomes the defining memory of their time in Japan. It isn’t about doing more, but about allowing yourself to do less, and realising that this, too, is luxury.
