Nakano Broadway Treasures

While Akihabara is flashy and loud, Nakano Broadway feels like its quieter, retro cousin. Tucked into an unassuming shopping arcade, it’s one of the best places in Tokyo to hunt for rare anime and manga collectibles. The upper floors are a maze of small shops, each one crammed with figures, posters, records, vintage toys, and memorabilia.

We’ve spent hours here with collectors who came searching for a specific figurine and ended up leaving with unexpected treasures. Unlike Akihabara, which is constantly changing, Nakano Broadway has a nostalgic atmosphere. Many shops have been run by the same people for decades, and it feels like a community as much as a marketplace.

Mandarake, the giant second-hand store chain, dominates much of the complex, but it’s the smaller shops that really surprise you. One might specialise entirely in 1970s shōjo manga, another in vintage Gundam kits still in original packaging. Even if you’re not hunting for collectibles, the sense of discovery is addictive.

For travellers, this is one of the best insider stops because it isn’t polished for tourists. It’s dusty in places, cramped, and packed with history. That’s exactly what makes it so compelling.
