Mt Fuji & Hakone – Iconic Peaks and Hot Spring Escapes

Few sights are as iconic as Mt Fuji, Japan’s sacred peak rising 3,776 metres. Paired with nearby Hakone, this region combines natural beauty, spiritual tradition, and hot spring relaxation, making it one of the best places to visit in Japan.

Mt Fuji

On a clear day, Fuji can be seen from Tokyo, but it is best experienced up close. The Fuji Five Lakes area, especially Lake Kawaguchi , offers postcard-perfect views. From July to early September, climbing Mt Fuji is possible, with trails leading to the summit.

Hakone

Hakone, less than two hours from Tokyo, is famed for its onsen and mountain scenery. Lake Ashi is perfect for a sightseeing cruise with Fuji views. The Hakone Ropeway glides above Owakudani, a volcanic valley where black eggs boiled in sulphur springs are said to add years to your life.

Art lovers will enjoy the Hakone Open-Air Museum and Pola Museum of Art. Hakone Shrine stands beside Lake Ashi, its vermilion torii gate rising from the water, while Gora Park offers seasonal gardens.

When to Visit

Winter offers the clearest views of Fuji, while summer is the climbing season. Hakone is beautiful year-round, from cherry blossoms in April to fiery foliage in November.

Food and Drink

Stay in a ryokan to enjoy multi-course kaiseki dinners and private open-air baths. Around Hakone, try soba noodles, local sake, and kuro-tamago (black eggs). In the Fuji Five Lakes region, cosy cafés serve matcha sweets and dishes made with local trout.

Conclusion

Together, Mt Fuji and Hakone capture Japan’s natural spirit. From climbing a sacred mountain to soaking in an onsen, this region is a highlight of any Japan travel package or luxury Japan tour.
