Kumano Kodo: Pilgrimage Trails

Japan’s mountain routes hold some of its deepest stories. Hiking along the Kumano Kodo or similar ancient pilgrimage trails, you move between shrines, waterfalls, and villages that have welcomed travellers for centuries. It’s not just a walk. It’s a journey layered with meaning.

We’ve guided travellers along stretches of these paths, and what stands out isn’t only the scenery though the sight of a pagoda framed against a waterfall is unforgettable. It’s the quiet in-between moments. A moss-covered stone marker half-hidden in the trees, or a small teahouse where pilgrims once rested. These are the places where you realise you’re not the first to pass through, and you won’t be the last.

The trails can be demanding in parts, but that adds to the sense of arrival when you reach a shrine or overlook. It feels earned. We always tell travellers to allow time, not to rush. These paths reveal themselves slowly, and their power lies in that slowness.
