5 Must-Do Activities During Your Narita Stopover
Justine Annan

Layovers often mean long hours spent in airport lounges, but my friend Wanda (a seasoned Air New Zealand flight attendant) and I had some cunning plans during our transit through Japan. With two full days before our next flight, we checked into the Narita Hilton Hotel, setting the stage for a mini adventure in Narita City—beyond just the airport. Here’s how we made the most of our time, with five things you can do to turn your stopover into a City getaway

1. Morning Walk and Spa Recharge

Wanda and Justine

We kick off our day with an early morning walk through the picturesque rice fields near our hotel. The peaceful surroundings instantly put us in a calm, reflective mood, far from the chaos of travel. After our walk, we indulge in a relaxing session at the hotel’s spa and sento (Japanese bath). Nothing beats a soak in the hot springs to rejuvenate after a long flight!

2. Discover Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

A short shuttle ride later, we find ourselves in Narita City, which feels like a world away from the airport. Our first stop? Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, one of Japan’s oldest and most revered temples. This sprawling complex is over 1,000 years old, showcasing a blend of ancient architecture and serene gardens.

Wanda and I are in awe as we explore the Main Hall, where the Goma Fire Ritual is performed several times a day. The rhythmic chanting and crackle of the fire create a spiritual energy that feels almost hypnotic. Another highlight is the Three-Story Pagoda, built in 1712, with its ornate design and cultural significance. We also visit Komyo-do Hall, the oldest structure on the grounds, connecting the temple to Japan’s kabuki theater tradition.

3. Stroll Through the Temple Grounds

We pass by gravestones of Buddhist priests, adding a quiet reverence to the space. It’s a perfect spot for a meditative walk—a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the airport.

4. Taste Narita’s Famous Eel (Unagi)

No trip to Narita is complete without trying the local specialty: unagi, or grilled eel. As we walk down Omotesando Street, leading from the station to the temple, the smoky aroma of eel grilling over charcoal draws us in. We watch chefs skillfully prepare live eels, grilling them over open flames and glazing them with a rich, sweet tare sauce.

We sit down for a meal of unagi served over rice, and it’s even better than I imagined—tender, savory, and slightly smoky. “This is the kind of meal that makes you feel like you’ve really tasted Japan,” I say to Wanda, who nods in agreement. It’s not just food; it’s an experience that connects us to the local culture.

5. Evening in Narita City

As evening approaches, we wander through the city’s streets, which come alive with small bars and restaurants. Wanda tells me this is where flight crews often gather after long flights. The vibe is relaxed, with a mix of locals and travelers, making it the perfect place to unwind. We stop for a drink at a cozy bar and reflect on our day.

The city has a charming, small-town feel, far removed from the fast-paced airport environment. “I can’t believe more people don’t explore this place during their layovers,” I tell Wanda. It’s the perfect blend of tradition, nature, and relaxation.

A Layover Turned Mini-Adventure

By the time we return to our hotel, I feel like we’ve discovered a hidden gem. Narita is more than just an airport stopover—it’s a destination in its own right. With peaceful temples, beautiful parks, and delicious food, it offers a true taste of Japan. Next time I have a layover, I know exactly where I’ll be heading.

So, if you ever find yourself at Narita Airport with a few hours to spare, don’t just sit around in the terminal. Step outside and explore Narita City. It’s the perfect way to turn a layover into a memorable mini-adventure.
